Pełny opis: |
The course is an introduction to comparative politics - the study of domestic political institutions, processes, and outcomes across and within countries. By analysing political systems of the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, China and Iran - among others - the students will discover and discuss the core characteristics of representative democracy versus authoritarian regimes. The class will focus on questions related to the vibrancy of democracy, the centrality of political and electoral institutions and the possibility of revolution. With the use of case-studies, the course will also undertake several questions which are central to the research in comparative politics. Why some countries successfully transition from authoritarian regimes to democracies and others do not? Are there political systems or structures which yield better outcome in terms of economic prosperity and peace? Why do revolutions erupt? Finally, the students will look at the dilemmas, which modern states face, including those related to globalisation, polarisation and fragmentations of the political scene. |
