Skrócony opis:

Introduction: sports economics as a subdiscipline of economics and as a knowledge of economic role of sports. Theoretical models of team sports leagues. Framework of economic analysis: competitive balance and uncertainty of outcome, labour market, institutional arrangements and strategic analysis of contests. Consequences: antitrust policy, betting markets, quantitative, effects of sports activity, mega sporting events.

Pełny opis:

The first purpose is to get students acquainted with a relatively new and growing subdiscipline of economics, which is sports economics. Therefore, the lecture is going to be based on academic articles, predominantly the ones that have been published within last few years. Due to references to both theoretical and empirical results, some of the common views on economic aspects of sports and sports industry shared by the students should be revised.

The second purpose is to demonstrate a potential of contemporary economic methods through their applications in non-orthodox context. A selections of tools, including microeconometric (including pseudo-experimental) ones, game theory, inequalities measures and key concepts of behavioural economics.

The third purpose is to encourage students to conduct either a quantitative analysis or a critical review of academic literature themselves, while providing synthetic conclusions. Therefore, an essay constitutes the most important component of the final evaluation.
