International Political Economy

International political economy, also called global political economy, is a research stream present at American and British universities from the 60s. It places the economic analysis of global goods, services, capital and knowledge flows within a broad political, regulatory and institutional context. It combines knowledge of international economic relations, institutional economics, transnational governance and international political relations, constituting a complementary research program. It is aimed at understanding how the global institutional framework influences the development and stability of the world economy.

Aim of the course is to familiarize students with the global institutional framework, including its political, economic, social and historical embeddedness as well as its regulatory effectiveness. Students will learn about the origins of international institutions (formal and informal), whose purpose is to regulate international economic and financial relations. Students will become familiar with the organization of these institutions, their functions, competences, governance and funding. They will also learn about global power alignment, the tools that global actors use the enforce their interests and how this play of interest is regulated by international organizations. Students will also analyse the effectiveness of the existing order together with its feasible alternatives - their strengths, weaknesses as well as opportunities and threats resulting from socio-economic trends (e.g. environmental protection, digitization or health issues).
