History of the Middle-East

The goal the lecture ("History of the Middle-East") is to acquaint students with processes informing the turbulent shape of the Middle-East today. It concentrates on contemporary history of the region, which plays an important role in international politics. It focuses on showing the complex landscape of the Middle-East, showcasing religious differences, primary geopolitical rifts, and the economy, as well as the international context. The main set of lectures concentrates on political and social history of the region since 1945. Key topics include: modernisation processes in the region (the emergence of Kemalist Turkey; impact of European mandates); emergence of the State of Israel and its consequences; the impact of oil deposits; the Iraqi-Iran War; the two Gulf Wars; Soviet and American presence in Afghanistan; The Arab Spring.
