Welfare Economics and Economics of Happiness

The course covers topics of welfare economics and its connections to economics of happiness. Firstly, the classes offer introductory theoretical grounds for foundations of welfare economics and economics of happiness. Secondly, they cover the following practical aspects:

1) issues with measuring welfare and happiness of societies;

2) comparisons of welfare and happiness of countries and cities based on empirical data;

3) income and non-income determinants of welfare and happiness;

4) role of welfare economics and economics of happiness in socioeconomic policy-making;

5) potential future developments of economics of happiness versus welfare economics.

The objective is to provide foundations for understanding welfare economics and its connections to a concept of happiness, in order to introduce the economics of happiness. The course offers theoretical grounds for, as well as practical focus on, welfare and happiness considerations. Measuring and using welfare and happiness throughout socioeconomic policy-making is a focal point of the curriculum.
