Study Methodology Proseminar

The methods and techniques of writing and presenting academic work in economics and the broader social sciences, including essays and degree dissertations. Communication of research findings. Critical analysis of texts. Developing and refining the skills and research toolkit necessary for producing work to an academic standard. Selection of sources. Overview of the regulations governing copyright and related rights.

The goal of the course is to convey and consolidate the skills necessary for analysing academic texts in economics and the broader social sciences, developing accurate academic language, selecting a sound research topic, and designing a coherent structure of academic work. Students acquire competences in the critical evaluation and retrieval of data from reliable digital statistical and bibliographic databases, data interpretation, the selection of subject literature, and the writing of concise academic texts and abstracts. During the course, students learn the principles of correct citation, the compilation of academic studies, the interpretation of source texts, and the presentation of research results in oral and visual form.

The course also includes training in the systematic literature review process, including the use of research reporting standards, as well as key issues in academic ethics, including the prevention of plagiarism and self-plagiarism and the responsible use of artificial intelligence tools in academic work. Particular emphasis is placed on the practical preparation of students for producing academic work in economics, including the construction, editing, formatting, and professional presentation of research findings.

- Identify and correct an AI-generated economic text in form and merit.

- Insert a correct reference into the text based on bibliographical data.

- Editing an abstract based on provided academic text.

Shaping the research toolkit and honing writing skills. Relevant legal frameworks of intellectual property rights.

The goal of the course is to convey and solidify the skills necessary for analysing academic texts

in economics and broader social science, developing accurate scientific vocabulary, making a

sound choice of the subject of research, designing the structure of the argument, obtaining the

statistical data and the access to the body of literature on the subject, writing concise academic

papers and summaries. During the course the student will learn how to correctly quote, compile

academic work, understand the sources, present the research results and abide by scholarly ethics

in his work, including avoiding plagiarism.
